Purim

One of the Jewish holidays is the Holiday of Purim. It's when they celebrate how Esther saved the Jewish people from destruction. The way they celebrate it is dressing up in costumes and going to the synogogue and reading the esther scroll. While reading the scroll everytime the name of Hammon is read everybody uses noise makers and yells to drown out his name. For those of you who don't know he is the bad guy of the story. There are also all kinds of parties going on in the streets for the more secular jews.

For like two weeks before the actual day of Purim the little kindergarteners dress up in their cute little costumes. Here is a picture of some of them when we were in the old city one day. Aren't they so cute!! it's pretty much like Halloween that last a couple weeks for the kids. they dress up everyday for about two weeks and get lots of candy. I thinking that i might want to start celebrating this. :)

About 20 of us went to the synogogue that was near by to celebrate purim. And yes everybody was dressed up at the synogogue including us. Even Obama came to the synogogue to celebrate. :)

I thought this was so cute. This old Jewish couple with their scroll of Esther all dressed up to celebrate the holiday.

We just had to throw costumes together from the stuff that we brought from home. i am supposed to be a Hawaiian girl. Even though it kinda looks like something you would wear just as a normal outfit.

Here is a picture of all of us that went to the synogogue. It reminded me of a big ward halloween party with a program. One other thing about Purim that i found to be very interesting was that part of the holiday is getting drunk for the adults. So pretty much all adults get drunk that night. Even the ultra orthodox Jews will get drunk. There were all kinds of policemen out that night. So for the adults its like a Halloween and New Years rolled into one.
